Special Issue Introduction

Cardiovascular disease continues to be one of the main causes of death in many developing countries. Among them, acute and chronic aortic dissections play a prominent role. In the last two decades, the association of several factors such as the improvement of the diagnostic imaging modalities, the longer life expectancy of the population and a longer exposure to high blood pressure, has contributed to increasing their incidence. However, despite all the progress made in the diagnosis and treatment of aortic disease and aortic dissection in particular, uncertainties remain about the use of biomarkers to anticipate and improve the diagnosis of aortic dissection and about the “ideal” therapeutic management of aortic dissection, although there is an unanimous consensus on what the diagnostic "gold standards" are. Moreover, there is no doubt that, in the management of aortic dissection, "decision-making" is a crucial step, especially regarding the timing and the type of the various treatment options.

In this special issue of Vessel Plus, we will not only discuss these issues, but also want to encourage and invite our authors to report their experiences so that we can enrich our knowledge about the new and latest frontiers in the diagnosis and management of aortic dissection.
