Special Issue Introduction
The burden of peripheral artery disease continues to grow given the high prevalence of risk factors and an aging society. Notwithstanding the beneficial role of pharmacologic, device and surgical interventions in patients with symptomatic or critical peripheral artery disease, great enthusiasm is generated today by the impact of exercise in preventing or managing this condition. Similarly, a great deal of research effort is placed in the current clinical and scientific arena on defining precisely the risk-benefit profile of physical activity in general and exercise prescription to prevent, treat and rehabilitate patients with peripheral artery disease. This special issue of Vessel Plus focuses precisely on the complex interplay between exercise and peripheral artery disease, aiming for a comprehensive update on the pertinent new translational, clinical and preventive perspectives.
