Special Issue Introduction
In the last decade assays that measure cardiac troponin have significantly improved sensitivity. This improved sensitivity has resulted in the creation of novel pathways for the evaluation of patients' presenting with acute chest pain. Professional guidelines have created recommendations for the use of troponin testing in acute chest pain patients to diagnose myocardial infarction. Because of the numerous troponin assays being developed with improved sensitivity, there is not a single approach to a diagnostic algorithm. This special issue will describe the use of the newer troponin assays in the evaluation of patients presenting with acute chest pain concerning for a myocardial infarction and address issues of special patient populations. Gaps in current knowledge will be presented and pragmatic approaches to diagnosis of myocardial infarction will be reviewed.
