Special Issue Introduction
There are various passive and active transport mechanisms of molecules across any biological membrane, such as diffusion and receptor-mediated or adsorption-mediated endocytosis. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a semi-permeable membrane that regulates the transport of ions, water, sugar and other necessary molecules to the brain. Particularly, it protects the brain from toxins and hazardous molecules. However, the BBB is also considered the bottleneck in drug development for brain-related diseases and cancers. Most drugs cannot overcome the BBB; thus, the treatments for brain tumors are very limited and not as effective as some for other cancer types. Therefore, new targeting strategies to overcome the BBB and deliver drugs in brain/tumor tissue are desperately needed. This Special Issue is focused on understanding the role of the BBB in health and disease as well as exploring the new strategies for targeted drug delivery to overcome the BBB. The authors can contribute Original Research, Reviews, Case Studies, Hypothesis Papers, Clinical Studies, Research Models, Drug Discovery, and Methods in the area of "Blood–Brain Barrier and Their Potential Role in Disease and Health".
