Special Issue Introduction
Cardiovascular disease increases markedly in prevalence and incidence with advancing age. Vascular dysfunction is a key player in orchestrating these diseases. The elucidation and the identification of underlying physiological mechanisms are critical to ameliorating the vascular aging processes. Although a variety of factors, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and sympathetic nervous system activity, have been studied, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Two of the key vascular function markers, arterial stiffness and endothelial function, are being measured using a variety of methodologies. However, there is no consensus on the best and optimum techniques to be used. Additionally, the measures of vascular functions have not been incorporated in routine clinical settings. Given the critical role that vascular function plays in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, it is necessary to investigate the healthy lifestyle strategies to prevent and attenuate age-related vascular dysfunction. The scope of this call for papers will encompass work detailing new research investigations in vascular dysfunction with aging. The editor will consider both original investigations and review papers, as well as types like perspective, opinion, and commentary.
