Special Interview with Dr. Joseph S. Coselli ---- Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award

On June 14th, the Editorial Office of Vessel Plus had the honor to interview Dr. Joseph S. Coselli, the recipient of the 2022 Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award recognizes those whose lifelong pursuits have achieved the zenith of accomplishment and serve as an inspiration to others. Dr. Coselli currently serves as the Guest Editor of Vessel Plus and has published an article with us in 2022. During the interview, he talked about his 45-year career as a surgical pioneer and this recent publication on open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Dr. Coselli is the executive vice-chair and professor of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair, and former chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

According to this article, while most patients are treated with standard methods, not all patients with chronic aortic dissection can be treated with open repair surgery. During the interview, Dr. Coselli mentioned that family genetic history is an important factor to consider when treating aortic illness.

"Always remember that patients are heroes. They are an important part of surgery." As an innovator and a leader in the field of aortic surgery, Dr. Coselli believes surgeons should always put patients first. He has completed over 8,500 surgical aorta repairs and more than 3,300 open thoracoabdominal aorta repairs.

"In today's world, it is difficult to do a lot of things at once. If you want to succeed in your field, you must be focused, devoted, and passionate about it." He added.

Dr. Coselli is also the director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, the leader of several high-profile surgical societies, and the recipient of numerous awards.
